I find my self constantly searching for some niche or good idea that no one else has tried. And in summary I have come up with nothing. I wonder if this is the best approach to take to achieving the next google. Although, essentially, google now functions the way it was in which is was designed 8 years ago by those two college friends it was not a new idea.

I remember long before I heard of google I was using yahoo and lycos to find the pages I wanted through college and into university. Maybe when Page and Brin put there heads together for the first time they just saw the potential for another search engine, maybe the complex algorithms and company image that we all know now came later. With this in mind I need to focus on what can be done now not what could be done in the future.

In the last blog I mention that need for someone else (technically and as a partner (not in a gay way)). I (apparently) am a database administrator by definition but I prefer the design part of my job more. A database developer on his on in his own company holds very little potential for a successful take over of the world. Normally a database is designed in conjunction with a application. That is what I need! I need a front end programmer. I need someone who I can work with to design full systems.

If I had someone who could programme in asp and .net we have the potential to make customised applications. If I do say so my self I have a good understanding of translating non technical requirements in to system designs and is something I enjoy.

Rounded edge could initially be a company that provided customised database applications built around a clients needs. We could do some research into local small businesses that needed database solutions for there business but could never afford an ‘it consultant’ to come in a design one. These types of systems after we had done a few would be very similar. Essentially they would all fall into application type categories, ie Stock control, contact management, audit logging and as such would hopefully get to be more similar in design.

If this was the case we would be in a situation to bang these solutions out to clients in no time. Meaning development time kept to a minimum and cost kept down. Delivering a custom solution to the client at a price one tenth of what they thought it would cost. Once the apps were out there part of the company could be in control of serving/maintenance contracts. If initially we had to keep the cost down for the application and maybe even made it at cost we could make it back from a serving contract. Orrrrr….. a support contract with bigger multi user applications. We could operate a support phone line or e-mail address for end users with problems. This also could be a lucrative part of the contract.

Yes this is what Rounded Edge will become. More attention to detail needs to be paid to the specifics but I think I have a good plan. All I need now is a good programmer.

Apart from the brain fart that is above I have been working on the beta rounded edge logo and its nearly done. This should be on the next blog. For now good night.

BRM

Need for Insperation

Many months have passed since first comming up with Rounded Edge as a company name. The decisions I find my self faced at this part of the project are quite substantial. I need to know what the company will do and how it will do it. The skill set I have is in IT but is quite specialised meaning that most things I choose for my company to do will require help from another party. It would be to much of a risk at this point to look at employing someone else so I need to find a partner.

There are many advantages to finding someone to partner you in a business. If I choose the right person I would have someone to bounce ideas off and someone to bring new ideas to the table. On the other side if I were bringing someone in on a '50/50' basis all my ideas on how I want the company image to look and feel would have to be agreed by the other member.

The person I choose would obviously have to be someone I got on well with and could tolerate me. It would also be better if I all ready knew how this person operated professionally. As it would only be us to start with it would have to be someone who was prepared to work the hard sell with me and be prepared to do anything for the business that was needed.

Where do I find someone who would be prepared to give up everything to give this a go???

Also what technical skills would they need? I haven’t decided what rounded edge would produce or what service they would provide.

More to follow.
BRM

First RoundedEdge blog

This is the first ever blog added to RoundedEdge blog.
